We Can Bust Fear by Knowing Who God Is!
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6 (NIV)
David had allowed God to be the leader of his heart. When David went to the Israelite camp and saw how scared everyone was to fight, he volunteered to fight Goliath! David knew who God was and that helped David to not be afraid.
King Saul did not want David to do this at all because David was only a youth. But David wasn’t afraid. He told the king that while he had been caring for his father’s sheep, both a lion and a bear had attacked the animals. Because God’s Spirit was upon David, he had killed the lion and bear! David knew who God was and that gave him courage when others were afraid.
When David and Goliath met on the battlefield, David was only carrying his staff, a sling, and a pouch with 5 smooth stones and Goliath was offended. David was not afraid to approach Goliath, even though he did not have a sword, shield, or spear, like typical soldiers.
Read: 1 Samuel 17:45-47
David called on the name of the Lord and wanted everyone to know that the battle belonged to God. David reached into his bag, took out a stone, put it in his slingshot, slung it into the air, and the stone hit Goliath in the forehead so hard that Goliath fell down! The Philistine army turned and ran for their lives. David experienced God’s victory in his life!
Just like God was victorious in David’s battle against Goliath, He is victorious in our lives too. He is there for us when we face that bully at school, when we feel all alone, or when we are nervous to invite our friends to church. It may not always mean that we get everything we want or win every battle we face in life, but it means that in the end, God will ultimately have the victory over everything. God wants us to trust that He will be victorious. God wants us to call on Him and ask Him for His help. He has good plans for our lives, even if they seem impossible or scary.
David knew God well and took time to get to know God. This helped him as he faced a lot of hard and scary situations in his life. He also wrote many of the Psalms where we can discover a lot about who God is! David talks about how God is our Shepherd (Jehovah Rohi), God is the God who saves (El Moshaah), God is our Light (Jehovah Ori), and so much more! David knew that knowing who God is will bust fears!
TALK ABOUT IT
Grab some legos, blocks, or something else you can stack. On each object write one thing that you are afraid of or worried about. Build a tower using those word blocks. Parents look up the names of God. Together as a family talk about which name of God would help with busting that fear. Start with the fear on the top of your tower. Once you have decided which name of God helps bust that fear remove the fear from the tower. Continue until all of the fears have been torn down. We Can Bust Fear by Knowing Who God Is!
